Next-generation segmentation

Segmentation, Brought to Life

A segmentation used to end with a deck. Now it ends with your segments, live: an AI-driven synthetic panel built from your own buyers that you can talk to, survey and run focus groups with, whenever the next question comes up. Here is how it works, with a sample you can click through.

For thirty years, a segmentation ended the same way: a readout, a deck, a few persona posters and a typing tool that got used twice. The segments were right, but they were frozen on the day of the readout. The next question about a new idea, a price or a message meant another survey, or a guess.

What is new

We still build the segmentation the rigorous way, from a survey of real category buyers. What changes is what happens next. Your segments become a synthetic panel in our Pervasive Insights portal: AI respondents calibrated to how each segment actually answered, with each segment in its real share of the US market. You can talk one on one with a segment, put a new question to a panel of 100 and read the answers by segment within minutes, or run a focus group with participants drawn from the segments you choose. Every answer is labeled as model-generated, and each one can be checked against the closest question your real buyers answered.

Why this is where research is going

Synthetic research is only as good as the human data underneath it, and a segmentation is the strongest foundation there is: a large, representative sample, a full battery of needs, attitudes and behavior, and groups that already explain how the market divides. Built on that, a synthetic panel can take on the next fifty questions quickly and economically, and the human study becomes more valuable the more you use it instead of less. Concepts, prices, claims and names get narrowed in days, and the short list goes back to real buyers with a sharper question.

How we build it

We start with a survey of category buyers, usually 1,200 to 2,000 people, weighted to the real buyer profile, with a battery of needs and attitude statements plus what people own, what they spent and where they bought it. We build several candidate solutions, typically three to seven segments, and judge them on statistical fit, stability across random halves of the sample and whether a marketing team can tell the groups apart in a meeting. We size each segment by dollars as well as people, because a segment that is 18% of buyers can be a third of the spend. We build a short typing tool and test it on respondents the model never saw. Then we calibrate the synthetic panel to each segment and check it against held-back human answers before you ever use it.

What you get

Two things. The segmentation itself: sizing in people and dollars, a profile of each segment, the needs that separate them, brand share by segment, a where-to-play recommendation and the typing tool with its tested accuracy. And the live panel: your segments in the portal, ready for one-on-one conversations, panel surveys and focus groups, with results you can cut by segment and compare to the human data.

Where it goes wrong

Clustering on demographics produces groups no product can serve differently. Too many segments produce a deck nobody remembers. Sizing by headcount alone sends the budget to the biggest group rather than the most valuable one. And synthetic answers built on thin or generic data sound plausible and mean little, which is why we only build a panel on your own human research and show you how closely it tracks. Use the panel to explore and narrow; when a decision is big enough, confirm it with real buyers.

The sample below opens on the live segments for a fictional home fitness brand called Northline Fitness. Switch between the one-on-one chat, the panel survey and the focus group, then use the other tabs to see the segmentation underneath: size and value, segments and needs, where to play, and the typing tool. Every brand, segment and number is invented.
